Most insurance companies lump bulk carriers in with general freight — and that’s a problem. Bulk is different. Your risks, your routes, your equipment — all of it. That’s why we started Bulk Insurance Group.
In this short video, Jared Flinn (Co-Founder of BulkLoads) explains why we built an insurance agency just for bulk haulers — and how we might be able to help you save money, get better coverage, or both.
🟩 No pressure. No obligation. Just the facts.
Absolutely, this is a common scenario. Many bulk haulers are looking for an agent who not only understands the nuances of hauling bulk but also offers expert guidance on expanding their operations. This process involves what's known as an 'Agent of Record' (AOR) letter. By signing an AOR, you can seamlessly transition from your current agent to our team. This allows us to take over your existing policy and serve as your dedicated agent, ensuring you have a knowledgeable and experienced partner in your corner.
To secure the most competitive insurance quote, it's advantageous to begin the process about 90 days before your policy's renewal date. This timeframe allows us to thoroughly market your account to all our partner insurers. Typically, we can provide a quote within a few hours to a few days. However, obtaining the best policy at the lowest premium involves our agents diligently marketing your account. The quicker you provide all required information, the faster we can deliver your quote. This proactive approach ensures you receive optimal coverage at the best possible rate.
Your driving record, type of equipment, commodities hauled, coverage limits, geographical location, safety features, experience, etc. all play a big part in what determines your insurance premium.
There are quite a few reasons why we're able to save bulk truckers money on their premium, here are a few:
Volume discounts: By pooling a large number of clients, we can negotiate better rates with insurers.
Customized policies: We tailor insurance coverage to precisely fit your operation’s needs, ensuring you don’t pay for unnecessary coverage. It's not uncommon for us to see double coverages on policies.
Risk management: We provide resources and tools to help improve your safety measures and driving records, reducing the risk profile of your fleet.
Strong partnerships: Our established relationships with multiple carriers enable us to find the most competitive rates and coverage options.
Diverse options: We offer a range of deductible choices and coverage limits, helping you find a balance between cost and protection.
We have direct contracts with seven major insurance companies: Continental Western, Acuity, ICW, Progressive, Berkshire, Ten Four, and Missouri Employers Mutual. However, most trucking insurance companies do not distribute their products directly to retail agencies like us. Instead, they work through what’s called a Managing General Agent (MGA) or a wholesaler. To provide comprehensive coverage to our clients, we partner with two wholesalers: Risk Placement Services and Amwins. These wholesalers give us access to a wider range of trucking insurance markets, including Northland, Canal, Lancer, Crum & Forster, Navigators, Occidental, Dakota Truck Underwriters, Hudson, and Berkley Prime among others.
As an insurance broker, we are paid through commissions on the policies that we place for our clients. The commission rates we receive from our contracted markets range from 10% to 12.5% of the total premium.
While it’s clear that commissions are how we earn money, our focus at Bulk Insurance Group goes beyond just making a sale. We exist to offer valuable insurance solutions to the BulkLoads community, ensuring that trucking companies are properly protected with policies that meet their unique needs. Our role is to guide our clients through the often complex world of insurance, provide ongoing support, and act as their advocate when it comes to managing their risk. The true value we bring is in helping clients navigate the intricacies of insurance and ensuring they have the right coverage for their business.
